A housewife who was accused of stealing two Starbucks brand coffee boxes along with some other food at a supermarket was sentenced to one day in jail as well as a fine of RM1,200 by the Magistrate’s Court today.
As reported by Sinar Harian, Magistrate Mohamad Izwan Mohamad Noh passed the sentence on the accused, Zalifah Salleh, 38, from Kandang here after she pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code for stealing inside the building.
Based on the charge sheet, the accused was found guilty of stealing a total of RM161.10 without making any payment to Siti Rahmah Muhamad Salih, a 30-year-old cashier who was working at Aeon Bandaraya Melaka shopping mall, Jalan Panglima Awang, on September 30th at around 2pm.
Public Prosecuting Officer Raudhah Mazman applied for a fair sentence to be given as a lesson to the accused and the community. The accused was not represented by a lawyer.
According to the facts of the case, some of the food items taken by the accused include two Starbucks brand coffee boxes, one 680 gram Nutella bottle, two sushi packages, four Dutch Lady UHT milk boxes, one bottle of Ribena Mobile, and two cans of Amore chocolate biscuits.
The court then decided to sentence her to one day in jail an RM1,200 fine. She will be charged with a four-month jail sentence if she fails to pay.
In his argument, Mohamad Izwan said, criminal behaviour still needs to be given appropriate lessons.
“As we are in the Covid-19 pandemic at the moment, I understand that many are desperate but you can get help from the right channel instead of stealing. The goal should not legitamise the means,” he said.
