It’s never easy when we get into an accident, be it minor or major as we’re bound to fork out some amount of money to fix the damages. What will you do if you are “tricked” into paying more than what you should?
Recently, a man named Ben reached out to WORLD OF BUZZ and shared an incident with us where he nearly got scammed into paying a huge amount for minor damage. The incident took place last Wednesday (2 March) on the KESAS highway when he was on his way to work and that was where he had accidentally hit the front car.
“It was my fault and I apologised to the man. We had a good conversation and agreed to settle the issue ourselves,” Ben explained.
Ben was told that the car he had hit, a Proton Saga FLX is a company car and the man had to inform his boss about the incident. The image below shows the minor damage resulting from the accident.
On the same night, the man sent Ben a quotation for the damage but it was something unexpected. The amount was way too much for a minor dent, and here’s what it ALMOST cost Ben.
- New rear boot – RM480
- In & out painting – RM350
- Labour – RM180
If you do the math, that is a whopping RM1010 for a minor dent!
“For that amount and to replace the boot cover for a minor damage like that, I started to think this could be a scam.”
It immediately prompted Ben to find out more about the vehicle and it turned out that the car is not even a company car as the man claimed.
Not only that but he ran a check on the Saga’s plate number and found out that the man has pending summons worth nearly RM2,000! With most of the information just a few clicks away on the internet, it’s really not that hard to uncover something nowadays.
Ben initially asked the man if his boss can opt to repair the dent as it wasn’t that major. When Ben asked if he could speak to his boss, the man said “my boss’ decision is the same regardless of who speaks to him.”
“When I asked him for his company’s name, he left me on bluetick and that was when I sensed he was lying.”
Ben also told WORLD OF BUZZ that he eventually decided to NOT pay the quoted price to replace the boot panel and both of them made a police report.
For minor damage like that, RM1,000 is certainly too much. What would you do if you were in this situation?
