Singaporean comedian Sharul Channa has been making headlines after a video resurfaced in which she makes remarks about race, religion, and royalty (3R).
According to reports by the New Straits Times, the Singaporean comedian’s performance in Malaysia was cancelled due to police reports about a 2018 video of her jokes.
A reminder for social media users and artists!
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that Puspal received word from the police about several reports filed regarding the Singaporean comedian’s video, which was recently re-uploaded.
Fahmi said Puspal’s action was a reminder to both local and foreign artists to steer clear of 3R topics that could affect national harmony.
He also pointed out that in Malaysia, if someone brings up 3R issues, the authorities would have to step in.
“This serves as a reminder for social media users and artists. It’s now up to the police to handle this issue,” Fahmi added.
Sharul’s response to her show in Malaysia being cancelled
@thesharulchanna took to Instagram to share her thoughts about her show being cancelled, explaining that the resurfaced video is titled “Halal-certified comedian“.
She mentioned that the joke was allegedly approved by Malaysian censors at the time, which is why the video was uploaded online by both the channel and herself.
“The show was recorded in Malaysia as part of Comedy Central Asia’s Stand-up, Asia! #2. Since it was approved by Malaysian censors, the video was uploaded by the channel and by me,” she added.
