MOH: News Asking People To Stay Away From Mamaks And Indian Restaurants Is FAKE

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health warns the public that news circulated on Whatsapp about a superspreader virus from India is false news.

Ministry of Health urges the public to stop sharing and spreading this fake news around the internet.

“CODE RED WARNING TO ALL MALAYSIAN”, says the title of the fake news, following with a brief description asking Malaysians to stay away from Mamak stalls and all Indian restaurants hiring Indian workers from India.

The fake news claims that there is a new Covid-19 cluster in Kuala Lumpur and that a virus named “Genom G64 Covid-19” from India and Egypt is a superspreader virus. The false Whatsapp news message also says that there is “no appropriate vaccines or treatment for this virus at least until 2023”.

Attached along with the false news is a link from a Malaysian online news portal. The link attached is a completely different story with no relation of the fake news.

The attached news was from 21 August 2020, which is a week ago from when the circulation of the fake news started on WhatsApp.

The editor of the news portal has also updated with a note that the fake news does not represent the news originally reported by them.

Remember to always double-check the sources of news and make sure it is credible and reliable instead of blinding spreading them, especially news affecting our health and safety.
