Her milkshake might’ve brought all the boys to the yard, but it’s her braids that brought all the girls to this food court in Singapore.
American singer Kelis, most known for her iconic song, Milkshake, recently shared an Instagram reel of how her braids caught the attention of two Chinese women at a food court in Chinatown.
It seems like the 43-year-old was minding her own business when the two women approached her and started scrutinising and touching her hair.
One of the women wondered aloud in Mandarin, “Is it real hair?”, to which her friend responded with, “It seems like it”.
Taken aback by the strange and rather rude behaviour of the two ladies, Kelis tried to subtly express her annoyance by touching one of the women’s hair.
However, the awestruck ladies didn’t get the hint and merely responded by nodding enthusiastically and saying, “Yes, it’s real hair“. One of them even gave Kelis a thumbs-up, rendering her even more perplexed.
The women appeared to be quite oblivious as they continued admiring Kelis hair and it’s length.
As Kelis resigned to the fact that the two ladies might be at it for a while, the person behind the camera asked her to “Just embrace it”, to which she sarcastically replied with, “Oh, I like to be touched“.
“I don’t even know what to say here”, Kelis said in her video’s caption.
Netizens have mixed reactions
In the comments, netizens expressed mixed reactions to the absurd incident. While some praised Kelis for being a good sport, they thought the women’s behaviours were still inexcusable because it should be common sense not to touch anyone without consent.
“I want to excuse some of it too but you can’t even go and touch museum pieces like that (…) What makes you think that it’s okay to touch a stranger?”
On the other hand, netizens attributed the women’s behaviour to a difference in culture and shared similar experiences they have encountered, especially in China.
“I embraced it because it’s cultural and harmless“, said one netizen who had the same thing happened to them while living in China.
“It was like being a rock star and a circus show all wrapped up in one. But they really don’t know any better”, said another netizen.
