Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today announced that starting this year, the Government is giving a ‘guarantee’ that students who are top scorers in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) will be offered a spot in Matriculation.

Speaking at the National Training Week (NTW) 2024 in Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Anwar said that those who get 10As and above in SPM and apply to further their studies to a higher level will be given a spot in Matriculation, regardless of their race and background.

MOE and MOHE will collaborate on the bold initiative’s implementation

The Prime Minister further revealed that the Education Ministry (MOE) and Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) will collaborate to iron out the method and implementation regarding the matter soon.

Anwar further elaborated,

“This initiative is meant to assure that all SPM top scorers will get the best opportunities to further their studies. At the same time, the Bumiputera quota system for the MOE Matriculation system will remain as it is and won’t be affected.”

The Government will continue to safeguard the Bumpitura quota and the meritocracy principle

The Prime Minister further assured that the Government will continuously improve education access and quality, as well as ensure that the Bumiputera quota and meritocracy principle for the benefit of all students are safeguarded.

Details of the government’s bold decision to recognise the excellence of students while ensuring fairness in the country’s education system will be announced by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek tomorrow.

Anwar stressed,

“This bold decision does not imply that we have solved the issue of fairness in education, there must be a willingness from the ministry, the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), scholars and academia to accept the reality that much more needs to be done to ensure opportunities for children (especially) from the urban poor, rural or interior areas.”
