If you’ve been around Bangsar these few days, you might have seen a bunch of pink balloons all over the place. From Lucky Garden all the way to Telawi, you would’ve been hard pressed to find a corner that didn’t have a bunch or two of them dangling around somewhere.
Turns out netizens have noticed as well and they are not happy about it.
Bangsarians and KLites alike have taken to Facebook and Tweeter, posting photos of the pink monstrosities lining the neighbourhood.
so happy to see balloons all over damansara uptown.
but im praying that @foodpanda_my would not let go of these balloons to the sky as it will end up in the ocean and endanger the sea creatures ??? pic.twitter.com/24qWkePrXh

Hey @foodpanda_my are you planning on cleaning up after this very environmentally unfriendly guerilla marketing campaign? stray balloons are a pollution and wildlife hazard ? #bangsar #kualalumpur #balloonblitz pic.twitter.com/CPPM47c3wb

Majority of netizens were worried about the pollution and environmental impacts these balloons might cause. This is a very real concern as Newsweek reports that helium balloons kill countless animals and can even lead to power outages.
Hello, @foodpanda_my, your balloons are floating everywhere around telawi. Please not let them get into the waterways, our turtles & whales do not eat them.
Please collect and clear them out. pic.twitter.com/cOIBuZnz3J

The @foodpanda_my balloon idea is highly irresponsible and lazy. Not even half a day and I see it floating across roads, getting stuck in drains, being a nuisance to pedestrians, and pretty much pointless.

Although these fears are more related to large volume helium releases, placing balloons everywhere without any intention to clear them could lead to plenty of them coming loose and harming people or animals.
The issue had gotten so out of hand that Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil tweeted Foodpanda to clear the mess up before he visits this morning, “Otherwise…!!” Oooh, sounds like someone’s gonna get in trouble!
Dear @foodpanda_my, if this is true, I’m certain Bangsar residents would appreciate you sending your PR team to cleanup. I’ll drop by tomorrow morning to see if these dying balloons are still there. Otherwise…!! https://t.co/dQ0r3Bzakx

Turns out, they’ve been cleared. Woo! Kudos to Fahmi and whoever cleared that mess up.
Although it would’ve been better if Foodpanda responded to all the criticisms from better, let’s just be glad that we have a crisis adverted and no one got hurt by these pink demons.
