The issue of minimum wage is not new in Malaysia. Whether it is for full-time jobs, part-time jobs 0r freelance jobs, many Malaysians are still underpaid as employers try to keep rates as low as possible.
Recently, a local fashion brand has come under fire for offering to pay RM7 per hour for a modelling job.
In a Facebook post by the brand, they stated that they are “looking for a part-timer who wants to dabble in modeling”.
“Payment is only RM7/hour. The shoot will last approximately 5-6 hours. We’ll need you for a whole day so that there are no outside distractions during the shoot,” the post reads.
“The most important thing is that you are able to do simple poses for our new clothes. Do your makeup yourself and come straight for the shoot.”
Netizens condemn the low rates
While the job listing was straightforward and did not seem to require too much work from potential applicants, netizens found that the hourly rates offered were too low.
“RM7 is so high. Might as well put RM1.50 an hour only,” one netizen said sarcastically.
Some netizens even shared their past experiences in modelling, claiming that the brand should offer at the very least RM100 per hour.
“I was paid RM100 when I modelled for my friend 6 years ago. It’s already 2023 and you’re offering only RM7.”
Another netizen who claimed to be a model shared that she’s never heard of anyone paying only RM7 per hour. “The least was RM200. They even prepared a makeup artist.”
