As Malaysians get into the thick of Ramadan, many locals are enjoying the delicious foods sold at bazaars across the country, with some only getting to try these items once a year. While this also acts as a good motivator for business owners to profit off some of their cookery skills and talents, there are some rules pertaining to Ramadan bazaars that cannot go unobserved.
A recent TikTok video shared to the official page of the Malaysian Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN), @kpdnlamanrasm, has been making waves online after officials revealed an important fact that every stall owner at Ramadan bazaars needs to adhere to: prices of items intended to be sold must be displayed clearly.
In the succinct clip, KPDN officials demonstrated their tasks in approaching multiple stores at a Ramadan bazaar, inspecting as to whether owners are displaying their prices both clearly and precisely at their booths.
Going through great lengths, the officers notified stall owners that as long as the cost of their foods were exhibited properly, they’d be in no trouble or face any repercussions. At one point in the video, officers also discovered stalls which had tags that were too small, and advised owners to improve their signage.
At the very end of the video, the officials spoke directly to the public and notified them that they may make reports to KPDN if they come across stalls without proper signs for the sale of goods.
After doing some sleuthing of our own, WORLD OF BUZZ, discovered that this practice is done in accordance with Section 9 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, which states that the prices of goods or services intended to be sold must be displayed “in a conspicuous position easily
read by any person intending to purchase such goods or services“.
Receiving immense praise online, many Malaysians applauded the KPDN officers for carrying out their duties and enlightening lay people on the proper business practices that should be adhered to by stall owners, especially to avoid any mispricing of items.
“This is the right way. If not, some sellers will just throw out a price they’d deem suitable,” commented another user.
