Would you pay RM10 for a bottle of mineral water if you’re desperate to quench your thirst?
An unhappy customer recently paid RM10 for a 1.25 litre bottle of mineral water at a restaurant in Port Dickson. In a viral social media post, the customer said the bottle of mineral water was initially priced at RM12, which he told the restaurant staff was ridiculous.
“I told the staff this doesn’t even cost RM10 out there. The staff told me that it was a good brand, and he eventually agreed to sell it to me for RM10. I drink a lot of mineral water, I know for sure none costs RM12.”
In an official statement by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN) in Negeri Sembilan, the officers of KPDN imposed a RM200 compound on the owner of the restaurant in Lukut for overcharging the customers for mineral water.
Negeri Sembilan KPDN Director, Muhammad Zahir Mazlan said, the compound was immediately imposed under the Price Control and Anti-Profitability Act (AKHAP) 2011.
“KPDN received public information regarding the 1.25 litre mineral water which was being sold for RM10. Following the complaint, a team of KPDN enforcement officers from the Port Dickson Branch inspected the premises.”
He added that this offence violated the Price Control and Antiprofiteering (Price Marking for Goods and Service Charges) Order 2020.
“Traders are advised to place price tags clearly on each item sold to avoid confusion and make it easier for consumers to make their purchases.”
