In this day and era, flora and fauna sanctuaries are hard to come by in the city. Which is why it is important to leave them be and let them live in peace, right?
But the sad reality is that bad eggs are always lurking around the corner.
Urban Orchard KL (UOKL), a community orchard project initiated by Uncle Yen to honour his son’s memory, took to their Instagram page to share how the selfish acts of some individuals led to the death of their beloved monitor lizard, Mr. Brown.
They wrote, “Normally, about 3pm to 5pm, Mr. Brown will swim to the feeding area. I feed him with fresh chicken head, skin, intestines and others. But, one evening, he was nowhere to be seen in the feeding area. At 3:41pm, Johnny and Casey barked towards the river. I saw Mr. Brown lying dead across the river.”
They, unfortunately, were not able to bury the poor monitor lizard, that were killed by foreigners, known as the ‘Jala people‘, as they use nets to catch fish at the river that is being taken care of by UOKL.
“I hope the public out there start a petition to the government or court order for the Jala people to stop from further damaging the ecosystem in the river.”
“In my 6 years along the river, I have not seen a single biawak (lizard) or monitor lizard dying because of fighting. To jala (net) the fish is one thing but killing Mr. Brown was too much too swallow. RIP Mr. Brown. In remembrance of Mr. Brown, he has his own tombstone in the UOKL graveyard. I also lodged a police report at the TTDI police station,” they added.
And this isn’t the first time this has happened
Late last year, a python that called UOKL home, Pablo, was also mercilessly killed.
“They strangled him – covered his head with a glove, tied his neck with plastic string, and let him suffocate and die. (We) need everybody’s help to nail these idiots. RIP Pablo,” UOKL wrote.
