Just yesterday (January 9), it was reported that Mat Sabu has reached Tamakkal, Tamil Nadu, India to observe the egg productions which will be exported to Malaysia. The visit is also to ensure that the eggs that will be imported to Malaysia are clean and cheaper than the rest.
Wee Ka Siong, on the other hand, does not think that’s a good idea, and he said that the visit to India is far from necessary.
In his Facebook post last night, the former Minister of Transport said that Mat Sabu should’ve just visited Yong Peng, Johor where more than 100 chicken farms are available.
“This is the most popular place for egg productions for the domestic market, and millions of eggs are exported to Singapore every day,” Wee added.
Are the eggs in India cheaper than ours? Wee certainly does not think so, and he explained to Mat Sabu, who is also the minister of agriculture & food security why the local eggs are far cheaper.
“Abang Mat, local eggs are only sold at RM0.41 per egg thanks to price control.”
Wee also said that local farmers are facing losses because the production costs are higher than the controlled prices. According to him, the imported eggs from India are sold at RM0.50 per egg, which he finds odd. Not only that, but the shipping time from India, which will take approximately 3-4 weeks will affect the freshness of the dairy.
“Are they still as fresh as local eggs?”
This prompted Wee to ponder the possibility of local eggs being sold at RM0.50 per egg if the price is no longer being controlled.
“Chicken farmers will be able to continue their businesses without suffering any loss. If we want to help the B40 group, we can provide egg allowance to relieve the financial burden of this particular group.”
Wee then suggested Mat Sabu consider and prioritise the local farmers, given the price of the eggs from India. He also told Mat Sabu that there is no need to look for imported eggs when the local supply is enough.
“Eggs and chicken are staples for the people, regardless of their race or religion. Please prioritise this issue,” Wee reminded Sabu.

Do you think it’s wise of Mat Sabu to look for exported egg supply in India, or do you agree with Wee’s take on egg production and supplies?
