Natural disasters are rare in Malaysia due to our strategic location so it’s a big deal when tornadoes appear in our country.
According to BERNAMA, a swirling wind phenomenon that resembles a tornado took place in Lahad Datu, Sabah on March 15.
Members of the public who saw the violent winds quickly took videos of the occurrence and shared them on social media platforms such as Facebook.
One of the business owners in the area, Chia Tet Vui, 62, when interviewed by BERNAMA, said that the weather at that time was cloudy.
He saw the whirlwind form and grow bigger, however, as the rain started, the wind dissipated.
“I have been in this area for 31 years and this is the first time my family and I saw something like this. I was genuinely afraid.”
The elderly man also said that several zinc sheets on his premises were ripped off.
Lahad Datu district police chief ACP Rohan Shah Ahmad confirmed that the swirling winds did happen and that several zinc roof sheets from the buildings in the area were torn and carried off by the wind.
Housewife, Malia Jamil, 50, said that she was in a supermarket when it happened.
“It was terrifying and so strong, it lifted the zinc roofing from the buildings and almost hit the cars. There were people shouting, warning everyone else about the tornado.”
