A man attempted to rob a store in Taman Segar, Cheras, because he allegedly did not have enough money for his son’s medical expenses.

According to a report by China Press, the man, who was wearing a black face mask to cover his face; entered the store on October 15 (Tuesday) at 2pm, before approaching the cashier at the counter. He then pulled out a knife from his bag and asked the cashier to hand over RM200.

He told the cashier that his son was very sick and that he was willing and mentally prepared to go to jail to save his son’s life. He also said that he needed the money that day itself or his son’s life would be in danger.

CCTV footage of the incident showed that the man then took off his face mask with the purpose of showing his face. Following this, he proceeded to put the knife back into his bag and bowed to the cashier to apologise.

While crying, he once again asked the cashier for RM200 as his son was waiting for help and promised to return the money. He also said that he didn’t want to rob the store.

The cashier apparently refused to give the man the money several times and asked the man to contact the store’s owner, to which the man then cut the amount down and asked for RM100 while emphasising that he didn’t want to rob the store.

At the end of the video, the man agreed to speak to the store owner and the cashier took out his phone to make the call. What happened after was not revealed.

Desperate dad or conman?

While many sympathised with the man as they believed he was merely a father desperate to save his son, one netizen pointed out that the man may be a conman as he had robbed their store days before this incident while providing the same explanation.

The netizen wrote, “This repeat offender showed up at my store a few days ago and robbed me with a knife. I have called the police. CCTV footage captured it clearly. He gave the same reason as this (China Press) report.”
