Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi hopes that Datuk Seri Najib Razak will be granted a pardon by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA) after the former Prime Minister has served his prison sentence for the past three years.

Zahid said that as a true friend, he always prays for Najib to be pardoned at the right time, but stressed that the power to grant a pardon is the absolute prerogative of His Majesty.

“I and all of us cannot bear to see Datuk Seri Najib continue to languish in prison. However, the absolute power to grant a pardon belongs to His Majesty the YDPA and should not be questioned.”

Indeed, we pray, indeed we hope, but do not pressure or exert influence on His Majesty. He knows when the right time is to make a decision and what needs to be done,” he said.

Release originally scheduled for 2028

The High Court is expected to decide on Monday whether Najib will be allowed to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest or remain in Kajang Prison.

His original 12-year jail term and RM210 million fine were reduced by the Pardons Board last February, with his release scheduled for 23 August, 2028.
