Whatever your method of saving money is, it’s definitely a good habit to cultivate – but perhaps you may want to reconsider exactly where you actually keep that bundles of notes.
According to Shanghaiist, an elderly woman had kept a large sum of her money inside a cabinet over a year ago. The woman, whose surname is Liu, estimated that she had kept about 10,000 yuan, or RM5,900, in her cabinet, and on Monday (12th August 2019), she decided to open the cabinet back up.
She then got the surprise of her life when she saw a bunch of termites munching away at all that cash. This is disgusting, at the same time heart-wrenching.
And off she went to the bank, hoping to trade the damaged notes for new ones. Fortunately, 6,900 yuan (RM4,000) of the stack was in a good enough state to be exchanged, according to the teller.
All things considered, she was really fortunate to only lose RM1,900 as the same case had happened to two other senior citizens in China, as an elderly man in Guangdong province had lost 40,000 yuan (RM23,000) to the insects. The other victim was a grandma who had her life’s savings amounting to 60,000 yuan (RM35,000) all eaten by the termites.
So, there you go, ladies and gents. When you stash away your money, make sure that it’s in a place that’s safe from any possible disasters. Better yet, keep it in a bank.
