In one of his first moves after being appointed as the Local Government Development Minister, Nga Kor Ming had visited Dataran Merdeka to check on the cleanliness of its public toilets.
During his visit, he explained that it is important for our public toilets to be in good condition as the cleanliness of public toilets is closely related to the image of the country, especially in the main tourist destinations or gateways to our country.
It appears as if Nga is taking this matter seriously as just last night, during an appearance on Astro Awani’s Agenda Awani programme, he revealed that the government will be handing out the ‘Toilet of the Year’ award to the cleanest public toilet effective immediately.
The initiative is part of its efforts to improve the overall cleanliness of public toilets in the country, which have not had a good reputation for a long time.
During the programme, Nga also said that the award would be judged on 3 concepts which are bersih (clean), menawan (attractive) and wangi (pleasant smelling) or in short, the BMW award.
“I don’t care if people call me the toilet minister because what’s important is for me to solve an issue that is close to the hearts of the people.”
“Public toilets should not be disregarded as those located in tourist spots and gateways into the country are what give tourists their first impression of Malaysia,” he added.
What do you think of the move? Would it help to improve our public toilets? Let us know in the comments section.
