The saying that all good things must come to an end is far too familiar for many of us, especially when tied to something that holds a special place in our hearts and memories.

Earlier this year, it was announced by property developer UEM Sunrise that they would be purchasing the land which Giant Hypermarket Kelana Jaya is situated for the purpose of property development.

Shortly after that, a Facebook post by public group Malaysia Shopping Mall this past October revealed that after 19 years of operation, the hypermarket would officially cease operations on 1 December 2023.

As the date draws closer, it seems as though operations at the hypermarket have concluded as well. In a post shared by Facebook user Ahmad Jazmi to the group Kelana Jaya Community, Giant Hypermarket Kelana Jaya recorded their final purchase from a customer.

Holding his receipt up, the man posed for the camera while standing in front of a sign that read, “Dear valued customers, we are closed! Thank you for your support”.

Reaching out to WORLD OF BUZZ, the man in the photo has identified himself as Vivek Raja Murugesu, a resident in the Kelana Jaya area for over 25 years.

“I had been visiting Giant Hypermarket Kelana Jaya since its birth. It had been a family-friendly place and a great place to do shopping,” wrote Vivek to WORLD OF BUZZ.

Striking the core of some Malaysians, many of those who frequented the hypermarket expressed their sadness towards its closure under a post by Malay news site Samudera on their X page @MySamudera.

Others recalled fond memories they acquired from their youth, having visited the hypermarket in years passed.

“Wow! This is my favourite Giant because I used to study at the Food Institute of Malaysia. So many memories I will cherish from there,” wrote one user.

And while some were rather melancholy about the entire situation, others chose to take a light-hearted route as it pertained to the closing.

“This uncle is amazing. He walked in and bought the entire Giant until it had to close down! Haha,” jested one user.
