Thanks to changemakers all across the globe, our world is ever-changing and constantly moving towards improvement and modernisation. Even more impressive, is the fact that a lot of these trailblazers hail from our very own Asian continent! #AsianPride
Read on to find out what are some of the Asian pioneers that we think deserve a bit more spotlight!
1. Kang Min-goo: Award-winning Korean chef with strong roots
Kang Min-goo is the owner of not one, but TWO restaurants with Michelin stars: Mingles in Seoul (his two Michelin-starred golden child), and Hansik Goo in Hong Kong (opened during the height of the pandemic to huge success!). His forward-thinking yet respectful blend of Korean and Western flavours is what made Min-goo worthy of his accolades, though he shows no sign of slowing down his innovation!
2. Hideo Kojima: Pushing the boundaries of video games since 1987!
Hideo is also a HUGE movie buff, here posing for a pic with award-winning actress, Elle Fanning; she will also be joining the upcoming Death Stranding sequel.
A household name within the community, Hideo Kojima has proven to be a bona fide video game auteur! Known for pioneering the stealth genre with the Metal Gear series, he pushed the envelope even more by creating the first ever “strand game” with Death Stranding, in which players all over the world are encouraged to help each other progress in-game. In fact, Hideo is so renowned that he got the likes of Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead), Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Hannibal) and Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pacific Rim) to star in Death Stranding!
3. Karuna Nundy: Lawyer by day, human rights activist all day
As a legal policy advisor to the likes of the Indian government and the United Nations, Karuna Nundy has proven repeatedly she’s a force to be reckoned with. Along with arguing against the restrictions on online free speech to fighting for better healthcare for disaster survivors, the veteran lawyer is also a champion of women’s rights. Overall, it’s Karuna’s ability to succinctly explain these very important causes to the public that makes her such an inspiration.
4. Hwang Dong-hyuk: Making ‘squids’ a global phenomenon
This South Korean filmmaker definitely wasn’t prepared for the worldwide sensation that is Squid Game! Not only is Squid Game STILL the most-watched Netflix TV show of all time, but it’s also the first non-English language show to be nominated for an Emmy award (Outstanding Drama Series) – even Lee Jung-jae became the first Asian actor to win Outstanding Lead Actor! With Squid Game season two in the works, plus a reality show based on his work, Hwang Dong-hyuk is truly the next big #AsianPride to watch out for.
5. Goh Peng Ooi: The first software billionaire in SEA
Did you know that almost half of the banks across Southeast Asia use the same financial software developed by Goh Peng Ooi’s company, Silverlake Axis? After the company’s inception in 1989, the Penang-born software developer has since established it as the top universal banking solutions provider across 80 countries worldwide! In December 2022, the Japanese government awarded him their most prestigious award, The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold with Rosette, for his work in elevating the digital business of Japanese companies.
6. Michelle Yeoh: From the tigress of Asia to Oscar-winning superstar
Who could predict that Michelle Yeoh would star in a sci-fi dramedy about sausage fingers AND earn her first Oscar award for it? Regarded as one of the most beautiful people in the world, Michelle proved she’s more than just a pretty face – she’s one of few action movie stars to perform their own stunts (she even impressed Jackie Chan!), and also demonstrated her dramatic prowess in movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Memoirs of a Geisha, eventually combining the both of both worlds for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Truly deserving of her title as the first Asian to win Best Actress!
It really goes to show that regardless of who we are or where we’re from, we can achieve international success as long as we put our hearts and minds into our work. Anything is possible! In fact, it reminds us of a certain company from Asia that braved the impossible to bring us award-winning beer. And that company is none other than Tiger Beer!
