Whether you casually play video games or are about the pro gamer lifestyle, we all know that the musical score should never go understated in the gaming experience, kan? To celebrate the soundtracks that bring these virtual experiences to life, here’s what the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) has prepared!
This 13 and 14 December, watch and listen as the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra brings legendary video game soundtracks to life with “Heroes: A Video Game Symphony” at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS KLCC!
Guided with the baton of Resident Conductor Gerard Salonga, this multi-faceted concert showcases the MPO’s creative orchestral ability to perform a diverse range of music, including melodies that have aurally decorated some of the world’s most popular video games.
Richard Salonga, Resident Conductor of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
With prior experience performing video game music via the sold-out Final Fantasy-themed Distant Worlds concert tour series, here are the epic soundtracks that the MPO will perform for the enjoyment of gamers and music enthusiasts alike!:
1. Hop into Tamriel with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’s Heroes Opening
This amazing concert will feature Jeremy Soule’s Heroes Opening score for Bethesda’s critically acclaimed The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. As the musical accompaniment for the popular medieval fantasy game, the score provides a perfect epic and atmospheric atmosphere for players exploring the large and open world of Tamriel while on a mission to thwart the Daedric invasion.
2. Immerse in the darkness of Greek mythology with God of War’s Ascension Main Theme
Rounding out a tale mired with tragedy and brutal vengeance within Greek mythos, God of War: Ascension is musically scored with Tyler Bates’ Ascension Main Theme. God of War players will surely recognise this musical arrangement that is played out during Kratos’ journey to sever his bond with the ruthless God of War, Ares. Fans of this best-selling franchise by Sony Computer Entertainment cannot miss the live rendition of this theme by the MPO!
3. Explore themes of war and peace with Metal Gear Solid’s soundtrack
Any gamer can tell you about Hideo Kojima’s influence on the Metal Gear Solid series, but only the most avid ones will give Harry Gregson-Williams his due flowers for his musical composition! His musical arrangement does more than just enhance the cinematic feel of the game — it also adds to the game’s intricate themes of war, politics, and philosophy. If Hans Zimmer is for the movies, then Harry Gregson-Williams is for the video games!
4. Dive into a world of endless conspiracies and intrigue with Assassin’s Creed’s Ezio’s Family Theme
Ezio’s Family Theme is one that will take you back in time to the Renaissance during which Assassin’s Creed II takes place! Composed by Jesper Kyd, the musical piece blends perfectly with the game’s 15th-century Italy setting thanks to its mesmerising orchestral pieces that add weight to Ezio’s journey.
5. Transport yourself into a realm of wonder and depth through Portal 2’s Variations
Composed by Valve’s very own Mike Morasky, Variations plays a vital role in setting Portal 2’s atmosphere and overall experience. Mixing ambient and subtle melodies, Morasky’s score fits right at home with the sterile, high-tech vibe of the barren Aperture Science facility in which the main character Chell is trapped. MPO’s orchestral re-imagining of the Portal 2 soundtrack is not one you should miss!
But wait, there’s more!
These aren’t the only video game soundtracks that will be performed live by the MPO! Check out the list of scores below which will be performed during this otherworldly concert:
