So, Facebook just rolled out an update with a brand new face recognition feature that’s supposed to be scarily accurate!
The social media platform can now notify users when a photo of them is posted, even if they aren’t tagged. One additional thing to note is that this feature will also notify you if your face is used in profile pictures. This is meant to avoid others from impersonating people on Facebook, according to BuzzFeed News.
This new feature has already rolled out to most of Facebook’s 2 billion users and applies only to newly posted photos and for users with privacy settings that make these photos visible to you.
“We’ve thought about this as a really empowering feature,” Facebook’s head of privacy, Rob Sherman told WIRED. “There may be photos that exist that you don’t know about.”
You might remember that a similar feature was available on Facebook a few years back, where users were given suggestions on who to tag in photos. This feature however, raised privacy concerns among users and was made unavailable across many countries.
Thankfully, this updated facial recognition feature can be disabled by users if they have concerns regarding their privacy.
However, there are still concerns that some photos can still slip through the cracks since this feature is only applicable to photos that you’re allowed to see based on other users’ custom audience settings.
