Everyone that is going to ‘balik kampung‘ this Chinese New Year is probably dreading the potential jam that awaits them. Fortunately, for this festive season, the PLUS Highway will be opening both sides of their emergency lanes for smoother traffic.
New Straits Time reported that PLUS Managing Director, Datuk Azman Ismail confirmed the news last Thursday (Jan 24th). According to him, from February 1 to 4, the emergency lane from Slim River to Sungkai (north) would be open. On the other hand, from February 9 to 10, the emergency lane from Simpang Pulai to Gopeng (south) would be open.
“We have discussed with police to open the emergency lanes on these two critical routes in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.”
“They gave us the green light to do so as this will ease traffic as well as reduce road accidents,” he said in a press conference.
Azman also mentioned how the Touch N Go reload lanes will be closed between January 31 and February 11 and that roadworks will also cease from February 1 to 10. This is to ensure minimal congestion on the highway during this busy period.
During this period, a total of 5,000 highway personnel will be on duty to assist drivers if they have any problems. Signboards will also be placed to inform drivers about the opening of emergency lanes.
Azman reminded drivers to start their journeys early to avoid any congestion on the road. He advised people travelling to Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak and Johor to leave before 10am, and after 10am for the remaining states.
If you are going back to your hometown this Chinese New Year, we hope that you stay safe on the road. Do keep these updates in mind to ensure a smooth journey home!
