It’s obvious that Malaysians love cycling, especially considering we’ve seen many cyclists in the middle of busy roads.

But what if you can not only cycle in a safe space that doesn’t have cars and motorcycles zooming by, but also help clean up the environment a little bit?

Melaka TV took to their Facebook page to showcase Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka’s (UTeM’s) new initiative, the SMART Hydrobike, which allows you to cycle on water while it collects rubbish from the Melaka River!

They wrote, “The ‘SMART Hydrobike’ is a new initiative to clean the Melaka River. The innovative product of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) indirectly introduces new facilities at the Melaka River in addition to the Melaka River Cruise.”

“The State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Exco, Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan shared that in addition to having the advantage of collecting garbage, the bicycle also encourages users to adopt a healthy lifestyle.”

The SMART Hydrobike has a net attached to the front of it, which allows to ‘catch’ rubbish as you cycle on the river!

So now, not only do you have something fun to do when you next visit Melaka, but you’ll also be contributing to the community by helping to clean the river.

You can check out the video of the SMART Hybrobike here
