It was revealed that former BN chairperson, Datuk Seri Najib Razak has distributed a total of RM470 million to all BN component parties during the 2013 general election.
From that huge sum, one of the parties, MCA was given RM16.5 million. This was admitted by the former MCA president, Chua Soi Lek in 2015, but he has stated clearly in an interview with Malaysiakini that they did not know where the funding came from.
He elaborated in the interview, “I already said there was money given to MCA. But during that time (2013), there was no 1MDB. News of 1MDB had not burst onto the scene yet. Talk of 1MDB only emerged in 2014.”
He then added,
“When people give you money…when your father gives you money, will you ask your dad where the money comes from? Did you steal it? Did you borrow it? You would just receive it in good faith, don’t you agree?”
Chua explained further that even if the money given to MCA really came from 1MDB, he and his party would not have any idea about its origins and they are just an innocent party following the leadership of BN.
Malaysiakini also questioned him whether MCA should return the money now that they know it originated from 1MDB and he stated that his answer would not have any relevance as he no longer leads MCA and its funds. He added, “You want to know? Ask the current MCA president.”
