Just recently, a China based engineer has shared his experience of having his job offer rescinded by E-commerce giant, Shopee, 3 days before the commencement date.
According to Lingo, he created a new WeChat account in hopes of documenting his new work life experience.
In his post he said:
“I can’t believe my first post in this account is how I lost my job. Just 3 days before my commencement date, I arrived in Singapore with my wife and our dog.”
“We were ready to start our new life together but a call from Shopee completely changed it. As I step foot in Changi Airport, I got a call from Shopee, and they mentioned to me that my job offer has been cancelled and will no longer be valid.”
Don’t give up
The engineer was however very grateful that many people were trying to help him. His wife has also been incredibly supportive and told him to not give up.
“I was told that many people also faced the same issue where their offer was retracted, and I just want to say, please don’t give up, try to find a job and seek for compensation!”
Unsatisfactory compensation
As for compensation, he is still in discussions with Shopee and nothing has been agreed upon yet.
“I couldn’t agree to the compensation plan that they offered and decided to appeal. It wasn’t until late last night that I received a reply from them. Unfortunately, they did not give me a proper answer.”
“I think most of the retracted offers came from the decision of the stakeholders and upper management. If you’re in talks with the HR department, it’s best to try and have them on your side so that negotiations for a better compensation plan can be done”, he shared.
What to do if your offer has been retracted and you’re already in Singapore?
According to the engineer, for the foreign workers who are already in Singapore, they ought to consider extending their IPA term.
“Head over to the ICA office to see what you can do and if you’re able to get a Singaporean to be your guarantor.”
“You can then stay for another 2-3 months and that should allow you enough time to find a new job and restart your life”, he explained
He ends his post by stating,
“Once again, thank you for all your support and I’ve created a WeChat group that could help other people who have gone through what I have to look for jobs.”
As of now, Lingo has yet to post an update since his last post.
Keep up the good work Lingo, we’re in awe of your optimism!
