The Prime Minister added that amid an uncertain global economy, Malaysia managed to maintain a GDP growth rate of 4.4% for the first quarter of 2025, with the country’s debt management performance showing positive developments.
He further revealed that efforts had been ongoing in reducing the fiscal deficit from 5.5% in 2022 to 4.1% in 2024. This year, the fiscal deficit is projected to be at 3.8%.
Anwar added that the total national debt decreased from RM100 billion in 2022 to RM90 billion in 2023, RM85 billion in 2024 and is expected to drop to RM80 billion in 2025.
The Prime Minister lauded the achievement, saying,
“We have managed to decrease RM20 billion in debt in just a few years. This is not rhetoric, but the result of prudent fiscal management and disciplined spending that we practise.”
