It’s no secret that Malaysia is full of developments and high rises, though with many that have been left abandoned, or half-abandoned, for various reasons.

Initially seeing consistent foot traffic following its opening to the public in 2016, a ‘luxury’ mega-development in Johor has now been considered a ghost town.

The Resonant News Twitter page recently disclosed details into Forest City in Johor, which was called a ‘Living Paradise’ by its Chinese developer, only for it to now be called a ghost town and dubbed the world’s 2nd most useless mega projects (out of 5) in 2021.

Oh, and Forest City was built on $100 billion (RM471,700,000,000).

Resonant News shared, “Built in 2016 under China’s belt and road initiative. (It was) built by Country Garden, one of the largest property developers in China. Money spent, $100 billion (RM471,700,000,000). Country Garden promoted it as ‘Living Paradise’, and their aim was to house 700,000 people.”

“The PRESENT REALITY, it’s a GHOST TOWN. Tourists and business owners say it’s not an attractive destination to spend money as it’s quiet dead, there’s nothing.”

Images of Forest City have recently been spreading through social media, with many sharing their opinions on the failure of the mega development.

“You can’t call a massive ridge of ugly, faceless towers ‘Forest City’ and expect people will be fooled into thinking it’s a beach paradise. Especially when the beach is artificial and you pollute the surrounding environment to build it,” a local woman shared.

“California Forever folks: By all means, divest yourselves of billions of Dollars and build an expensive ‘city’ in the middle of a bunch of farmland where nobody wants to actually live. I look forward to the urban explorations YouTube videos,” a foreign man added.

One Malaysian even suggested that the Johor authorities use the empty lots to house orphanages and the homeless.

Why do you think Forest City, a mega project that was meant to redefine luxury living, failed so badly?
