Whenever people talk about golf, many would automatically imagine that it is a rich man’s sport. But what if we tell you that most of the stuff you hear about golf is actually a misconception?
If you wish to try out golfing but you’re too intimidated to do so, then read on as we debunk some of the biggest misconceptions about golf and why you should try it out!
1. “Golf is a sport dedicated to men”
This misconception may have existed due to golf’s long-standing male dominance. But the truth is, female golfers have been actively participating in this sport for a long time!
Don’t believe us? Just take a look at the long list of professional golfers who are acknowledged by the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and how female golfers now have a league of their own. In fact, did you know that the Malaysian Ladies Golf Association (MALGA) has been around since 1983 to support and develop female golfers in Malaysia?
2. “Golf can only be enjoyed by older people”
This misconception can easily be debunked if you take a look at the age of some of the world champion golfers. For instance, Lydia Ko reached number 1 in the Women’s World Golf Rankings when she was 17 years old, making her the youngest golfer to top a ranking in professional golf!
Rose Zhang, another professional golfer, also gained the title of champion when she won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Golf Championship at the young age of 17 years old. Super impressive, right?!
3. “It’s a rich man’s sport because it is so expensive to enjoy”
Contrary to popular belief, did you know that you can enjoy a fun session of golf without breaking the bank? Yup, this is possible if you visit a driving range. It’s a great way to practice your skills and one session with 100 balls could cost less than RM20. Just check out this list of driving ranges around Klang Valley for your next golfing lesson.
On the other hand, if you’re ready to invest in some golf clubs but feel like they’re too expensive, we’d recommend searching for more reasonably-priced options online like this beginner-friendly set of clubs that is available for around RM400.
It also does not cost that much to become a spectator at a golf tournament. For example, there’s a tournament happening soon in Kuala Lumpur with tickets starting from only RM38. More on this later!
4. “Playing golf doesn’t give you many benefits”
Many people think that golf doesn’t have many benefits as it doesn’t look like an active sport. In reality, golf involves a lot of walking. On average, golfers would walk around three to five kilometers on the golf course which can help you burn off calories while maintaining your heart health.
Playing golf is also proven to help with your sense of balance which can increase your muscular strength and improve joint support. Golf is also said to be a great stress reliever as you’ll be spending time outdoors while surrounded by greenery.
5. “It’s hard to enjoy as it is such a difficult game”
If you think golf is a difficult sport, think again! The rules of the game are not as intricate as it seems. What makes it tricky are actually the skills that you need to excel at the sport. If you need help understanding the game, we found something that can help you out…
