It seems every now and then, a famous eatery in Penang either gets fined or closed down temporarily. This seems to be the fate of some eateries in Penang as of recently.
A few famous eateries in Penang were the centre of attention of an operation conducted by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), yesterday. According to The Star, two famous eateries in Penang were slapped with compounds worth over RM200 for multiple offenses.
The infamous Deen Maju Nasi Kandar was found guilty of placing raw materials on the floor and for risking cross-contamination by improper storage of hard-boiled eggs. In the case of Line Clear Nasi Kandar, they stored their food mix in a freezer.
These famous outlets aren’t the only ones who were the target of MBPP’s sting operation. The operation also included four other well-known premises on Macalister Road and Jalan Gurdwara. Rat droppings were found on the premises in Macalister Road. But the most surprising one would be the premises on Jalan Gurdwara.
This is because the premises were found having live cockroaches and a dead rat! Rat droppings were also found in a hawker centre in Jalan Gurdwara. Yikes!
Bawani Murugesan, an MBPP Health Officer, said that the three premises were ordered to close because cockroaches, live rats and their droppings were found. All in all, RM520 worth of compounds were issued to four out of the six restaurants.
“This is our eighth spot check since we started our operations last November,” stated Bawani. She also added that spot checks will be ongoing on Penang Island throughout this year.
Since the operations started, it has raked up over RM2000 worth of compounds and 21 premises were closed down. This operation has created a slight change as some outlets have improved their hygiene and cleanliness.
Nasi Kandar has earned a permanent spot in the hall of fame, being one of Malaysia’s most iconic comfort foods. We all love our Nasi Kandar, but, sometimes we need to be aware of what’s happening in the kitchen too.
