Yesterday (2 February), a 52-year-old woman was found dead in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds at her home in Alor Setar, Kedah.
Kota Setar District Police Chief, ACP Syed Basri Syed Ali, later confirmed in a statement that the victim’s son had called to report that his mother, Zaharullail Basir, had been murdered at their home in Taman Sultan Abdul Halim, Jalan Tanjung Bendahara.

An examination of the scene revealed three stab wounds, including one on the upper left chest, injuries to the wrist, cuts on the head and face, as well as small wounds and a stab wound on the left palm.
“The motive for the murder is still under investigation. However, checks also found that a handbag containing jewellery, cash, and a mobile phone was missing,” Syed Basri told Harian Metro.
In a recent development, Harian Metro reported that the murder suspect was finally arrested by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) last night while on his way to Selangor.
According to Syed Basri, the 28-year-old suspect was arrested at 8:34 PM by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Kedah Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK), with help from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Kota Setar District Police Headquarters (IPD).

He added that the suspect, who is the victim’s son, was detained less than 24 hours after the incident while travelling on a coach bus at Kilometre 441.5 southbound on the North-South Expressway.
“He was arrested to assist in the investigation of the murder of a 52-year-old woman that occurred yesterday in a residential area in this city. Checks also revealed that the suspect has a prior criminal record,” he added.

Syed Basri said that after the arrest, the suspect was brought to the Alor Setar Magistrate’s Court and remanded for seven days from today until 9 February.
The remand order, issued by Magistrate Nur Shifa Mohd Hamzah, is to assist in the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
“The PDRM also advises the public not to speculate or share unverified information that could disrupt the investigation. Anyone spreading false or misleading information may face legal action under the relevant laws,” he added.
