A 27-year-old history teacher died after he developed a blood infection from an insect bite after he came back from a holiday in Vietnam.
According to Mirror, Josh Brooker from England fell sick shortly after he came back from Vietnam, which he said was the best thing he had ever done. However, he started developing feverish symptoms.
He was admitted to the hospital on 3rd September and had to be placed into intensive care when the infection started targeting his lungs. When he was transferred to another hospital, his condition became even worse and his health deteriorated.
Hospital staff noticed that Josh had an insect bite on his head which had become very sore and infected.
Doctors then found that Josh’s bloodstream had staphylococcus bacteria, which had most likely entered his body through an insect bite.
Staphylococcus is a type of bacteria that can cause many types of infections in your body. It is a common bacteria found on most people’s skin, and often it does not cause disease, according to Medicine Net.
However, Josh mostly likely had contracted Staphylococcus aureus – a strain of the bacteria that can cause serious infections if it enters the body through a wound on the skin or via the respiratory tract.
Josh also developed abscesses close to his spine and in his lungs.
A few days later, Josh had to be placed in intensive care as the infection gradually wore his body down. It started attacking his lungs until he could no longer breathe on his own.
On 1st October, after spending almost a month in hospital, Josh passed away in intensive care.
“We were there every day by his side until the end. It was horrific. No parent should have to see their child die,” Josh’s dad said.
RIP Josh.
