As Malaysians, we already know that most of us have a pretty unique sense of humour that can’t be found anywhere else. One way our comedic nature shines is through the bizarre names we’ve chosen for some places dotted across our nation. Perhaps many people do not know that our country has various kampungs and even islands with strange names (that we wouldn’t change one bit!).
Most of these places are located in rural areas and have been around for decades. Scroll further to discover some of our country’s funniest location names that you wouldn’t even believe existed! But they do, and their existence will probably make any true Malaysian giggle.
1.Jalan Boo Bee, Perak
This one makes us “heheh”. Only those with high levels of maturity and years of studying comedy will find this road name funny.
2. Kampung Belum Baru, Perak
Legend says this village is still developing… forever stuck in the past.
3. Felda New Zealand, Pahang
If you squint enough, it looks just like the serene green landscapes of New Zealand!
4. Kampung Cinta Manis, Pahang
Maybe those with troubles in their love life should visit this place for some good luck…
5. Pulau Kentut (Kecil & Besar), Kedah
It can’t get any funnier than the fart islands of Langkawi. Brace yourself for a randomly bizarre origin story! According to legend, there was a wedding between Gunung Machinchang’s daughter and Gunung Raya’s son, where the groom was offered undercooked rice.
In a fit of indigestion, the groom farted twice, releasing two islands. Yes, that’s how the name Pulau Kentut Besar and Kecil came about. Don’t you just love our Malysian culture?
6. Kampung Batang Bergedik, Kelantan
Batang can be a Malay slang word for… nevermind (here’s a tip – it’s sexual. Which is surprising as it’s located in one of the nation’s most religiously conservative state).
But this kampung most definitely exists and it actually homes a small tight-knit Malay Muslim community.
7. Kampung Melaka Pindah, Melaka
Yes it’s true, there’s a second Melaka located WITHIN the Melaka we all know. At least it didn’t pindah (move) that far.
8. Kampung Tetek Ketek, Melaka
Soooo apparently there are Malaysian trolls who are determined to convince people that a Kampung Tetek in Melaka actually exists, going so far as to photoshopping multiple different photos, adding the “location” to Google and even GPS navigation application, Waze.
BUT actually it doesn’t exist (or does it? Can a seasoned Melaka resident please confirm this in the comments?!) The alleged real name of the Kampung is called Ketek, which is believed to mean “steal” or “to knock” in Kelantanese dialect. The more we know huh!
The spelling of Ketek and Tetek are suspiciously close, and probably why some people just couldn’t help but make up the fake existence of a booby village..
9. Kampung Batang Melaka
Aside from the slightly suspicious name, this town is like most small sleepy towns in Malaysia.
10. Kampung Seronok, Pulau Pinang
Now we know which kampung to visit for a good time!
11. Jalan Microwave TV Station, Sabah
Apparently this Microwave TV Station road was named as such because it lead to a communication tower located at a nearby hill…
Kudos to this person for coming up with one of the most hilarious road names in Malaysia, a true comedy king.
12. Jalan Menggatal, Sabah
Maybe we can relocate all the horny people who can’t stop flirting to this spot…
13. Kampung Baru Jumpa, Sabah
Well, we’re glad people eventually found this kampung.
14. Kampung Paris, Sabah
Can’t afford a trip to France? It’s okay bah, just go to Kampung Paris at Sabah.
15. Kampung Penajis, Negeri Sembilan
This is kind of a crappy name, guys.
16. Gunung Besar Hantu, Negeri Sembilan
This mountain is actually a popular hiking spot for experienced climbers. Thankfully, it’s not haunted.
17. Kampung Imam Lapar, Terengganu
You better show some compassion and feed the hungry Muslim priests here!
18. Kampung Atas Tol, Terengganu
Screw creativity and being innovative. This kampung’s name is clear and straightforward, it’s located after the toll, people!
19. Sungai Bangang, Terengganu
This river is one of the country’s hidden gems with it’s pristine clear waters. It’s actually called Sungai Bangan but many people call it Sungai Bangang (which translates to “stupid” in Malay) instead due to it’s similar pronunciations.
20. Pulau Susu Dara, Terengganu
Island of the Virgin Milk? Damn.. what were they thinking when they named this picture perfect spot?
21. Kampung Mangkuk, Terengganu
Mangkuk usually describes someone dumb in Malay. It’s therefore surprising how this beautiful village is named as such!
22. Sungai Mati, Johor
Disclaimer: No one died here. Contrary to its ominous reputation, Sungai Mati is a vital source of water, bringing life to the rice fields along its banks.
23. Kampung Desa Temu Jodoh, Johor
The name of this place isn’t that random! Calling all single Malaysians, you might want to try your luck of finding your next romantic partner here.
This kampung was actually named in conjunction with a mass wedding ceremony held in 1978 that involved 24 couples being married as part of Johor state government’s Youth Land Plan. Pretty sure your kampung isn’t this cool.
Bonus Round!
The last two places on our list are no longer called these names for… obvious reasons, but we still wanted to showcase them.
24. Kampung Bogel, Terengganu
Although Kampung Bogel (located near Kampung La, Hulu Besut) has changed its name to Kampung Beliku since over 2 decades ago, surrounding residents still like to call this village by it’s old name.
The original settler of the kampung, Jusoh Mamat said he is not sure why the village is known by that name but the villagers have called it Kampung Bogel (translates to “naked” in English) since way before Merdeka.
25. Pulau Babi, Johor
Even speaking the name aloud is kind of blasphemous! This Babi island is breathtakingly gorgeous and has many tourists all year around.
Some say this island got it’s name from a time when numerous wild boars roamed the island before man inhabited it. Unfortunately for this amazing yet haram location, the name has been changed to something more appropriate (and boring) which is Pulau Besar.
And that concludes our cheeky list. We hope some of these uniquely Malaysian location names tickled your funny bone.
