Dugongs are wonderful creatures! However, these shy giants are vulnerable according to the IUCN list, which is quite a sad thing.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, most if not all of the humans are required to just stay at home and not go anywhere. This means that the super-shy dugongs have the chance to go out and play in the open waters without being scared!

According to the Bangkok Post, officials of the Marine National Park Operation Centre No. 3 were patrolling nearby the Koh Libong Islands when they saw 22 dugongs! The sea mammals including some mothers and babies were feeding on the seagrass peacefully while sunning themselves. Usually, they would not be able to go to such shallow waters due to disturbance from fishing boats and speedboats carrying tourists.
The Thai Department of National Parks has released drone footage of the dugongs on their Facebook page.

The appearance of dugongs in that area is a little extraordinary as the species is threatened, reported Awani. It is said that in 2019, there were only 250 dugongs in Thai waters.

Just last year, the death of a Thai baby dugong has shocked the whole world. The baby mammal’s cause of death was an infection aggravated by bits of plastic lining her stomach.
Well, this is certainly really good news! Aren’t dugongs the cutest sea mammals you’ve ever seen?
