The Covid-19 pandemic not only caused many people to lose their jobs and their livelihoods. It also caused a massive break-up wave in Malaysia, mainly in KL and Selangor.

As according to information provided by international dating application, SweetRing, they saw a 30% increase in new users this year where:

  • 83% of them had just broken up with their significant others and blamed long distance during the pandemic for their splits.

Break Up 2

Apparently, the peak periods for break ups were in April, June and October.

They also shared the areas in which the pandemic hit the hardest on relationships, with the most severe being the Klang Valley, followed by Penang and Johor Bahru.

But, those in Selangor were the most strong-willed as they’ve spent an average of 6.8 hours a day on the application, in an effort to find love.

A majority of the new users are women.

Break Up 3

After analysing new user data, they found that the greater number of them are:

  • Female medical staff members, with teachers and tour guides coming in in second and third.
  • Among them are also foreign men who are either engineers, those working in the financial industry or those working in the legal industry.

When asked about their plans for the future, 83% of new users explained that they’ve returned to their home towns since the pandemic and are looking to settle down. Hence, they are looking for more ‘serious’ matches compared to casual flings.

It seems that the pandemic has caused quite a change in many people’s emotional state. We genuinely hope that every single one of them finds the love of their lives.
