2 brothers, aged 2 and 3 years old respectively, are reported to be in critical condition after eating crackers believed to contain rat poison, which they took from an orchard fence on Sunday (July 7).
The orchard is said to be located near the brothers’ home in Kampung Padang Ubi, Kedah.
According to a report by Berita Harian, the Kulim District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Azizul Mohd Khairi shared that the victims’ mother had noticed her children vomiting at their home and took both of them to the Malau Health Clinic and then to the Kulim Hospital (HK) for further treatment.
As a result of investigations, it was found that the 2 brothers were believed to have taken a packet of instant crackers that was left hanging from an iron wire of the orchard’s fence. The crackers contained poison to trap monkeys.
“Both victims are believed to have opened and eaten the snacks. The victims’ mother then saw her children vomiting and foaming at the mouth at home at 11am,” he said.
The HK medical officer who treated the 2 boys found that they were in critical condition and referred them to the Penang General Hospital.
“This case is being investigated in accordance with Section 31(1)(a) of Act 611 relating to child neglect and Section 284 of the Penal Code,”
“We are now tracking down the orchard owner, who is suspected to be the victim’s neighbour, to help with the investigation into this case,” he added.
