A video of a tragic incident has gone viral on social media, showing an 18-year-old woman getting unexpectedly swept away by powerful waves while spending time with her friends at a rocky beach on December 19.

The Daily Mail reported that Merlin Septiana and her friends had gone to the popular Semeti Beach in Lombok, Indonesia, and decided to take pictures while sitting on a rocky cliff.

She clung to a boulder

While posing for pictures, Merlin was suddenly swept away by the powerful waves, throwing her into a chaotic struggle as she clung onto a boulder for her life.

In a heartbreaking photo taken just moments before the waves hit, she can be seen wearing headphones, which might’ve drowned out the sound of the waves, leaving her unaware of the danger coming her way.

In the footage, locals nearby desperately tried to save her life, but she soon slipped and disappeared under the white torrent.

Her lifeless body was found against the rocks

The head of the Mataram Search and Rescue Office, Lalu Wahyu Efendi, revealed that the incident took place around 3 PM local time.

He mentioned how Merlin’s friends tried to help using makeshift tools like wood and fishing rods, but it didn’t work. Local residents quickly called the police.

Rescue teams and police rushed to the scene and started searching along the shore. They found Merlin’s lifeless body being slammed against the rocks at 5:13 PM.
