You may have heard of the saying, “a friend in need is a friend indeed,” but that’s not true for this particular guy because he was put into this terrible situation by his friends.

A 31-year-old man was recently abducted by his own friends who then demanded RM30,000 ransom from the victim’s father. This incident happened at an entertainment outlet in Bukit Tengah, Penang on 25 September.

According to Kwong Wah, the suspects are aged 19 and 28 respectively and they have known the victim for six years. The elder suspect was even the victim’s ex-classmate! They became bros after working at an entertainment outlet.

“The victim had promised the suspects that if his investment ever gets any handsome return, he would give the suspects some money. However, the victim broke the promise which angered his friends,” Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief said.

During the time of the incident, the friends had invited the victim for a yumcha session but changed the location at the very last minute. Instead of another café, they took him to their workplace, the entertainment outlet and wildly accused him of owing them RM30,000.

They then forced him to contact his father to borrow RM30,000 or else they wouldn’t let him out. Although he did not owe them any money at the first place (other than that verbal promise), the victim obeyed their instructions and texted his father.

At the same time, he sneakily texted the police saying that he had been abducted at the workplace. The boys in blue rushed to the scene after being notified and saved the victim. The suspects were arrested and the case is now being investigated under Section 285 of the Penal Code for committing an extortion.

We still can’t believe the victim was abducted by his friends over a verbal promise and RM30,000. Luckily, he made it out fine!
