There are a lot of scary accidents that have happened not long ago involving escalators. Sometimes, it’s literally the stuff from our nightmares so we really must be careful when we are on one of these machines.

Unfortunately for this elderly woman, she lost one of her legs when she was using an escalator at a shopping mall in Heilongjiang, Harbin China, reported Shanghaiist.

According to the victim’s family, she and her sister had visited the shopping mall during the weekend. When they were using the escalator, the victim’s legs somehow got trapped in between the steps.

On the other hand, a few witnesses from the incident had another version of the story as they said that the situation could have easily been avoided. They said to reporters that the escalator was under repair lately and the workers were still conducting some test runs.

During one of the trials, the elderly woman had allegedly pushed her way through to get on the escalators. The people around there tried to convince her not to use the escalator but she was stubborn and still got on the escalator despite advice from others.

Some of the eyewitnesses said that the woman even removed the barrier in front of the escalator before using it.

They said that as soon as she stepped on the escalator’s landing plate, she fell straight in and got stuck. The victim was brought to the hospital for further treatment and her left leg had to be amputated, while her right leg suffered serious injuries. The authorities are currently investigating the incident.

So guys, please be extra careful the next time you’re using an escalator and don’t be so stubborn. Make sure to watch your steps and if it’s only a couple of floors higher, think about using the stairs. Stay safe everyone!
