A recent closed-circuit television (CCTV) video has been making the rounds online, showing a woman allegedly pushing an elderly man and causing him to fall into a drain.
The incident reportedly took place at around 10:30 AM on 18 September in front of a row of shops in Taman OUG. The victim, who was a former Selangor hockey player in the 1960s, sustained injuries to the back of his head, left hand, and back.
Elderly man followed before getting pushed into drain
According to Berita Harian, the suspect, who was a former independent candidate in the 15th General Election (GE15), was later arrested.
Brickfields District Police Chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook said initial investigations found that the 79-year-old victim had gone to his friend’s tailoring shop after noticing that he was being followed by the suspect.
A few minutes later, the victim left the shop and was allegedly suddenly pushed by the suspect, who had been waiting outside. The push caused him to fall into a drain, with the incident captured on the shop’s CCTV.
“The victim’s friend lodged a police report at 12:37 PM on the same day. Following this, a team from the Brickfields District Police Headquarters’ (IPD) Criminal Investigation Division (D7) raided a house and arrested the suspect,” he said.
Suspect denies pushing the victim
Chang Hook said the suspect was found to have no personal relationship with the victim and initially denied pushing him during questioning. However, she was unable to provide a reasonable explanation for her actions.
The suspect has since been remanded for one day at the Brickfields IPD lock-up, while a magistrate also ordered her to undergo psychiatric assessment and treatment to assist with the investigation.
Meanwhile, the elderly victim was taken to the University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM), where he was warded in the emergency department for four days for further treatment before being discharged last Monday (21 September).
“Police are currently waiting for the full medical report from the specialist before referring the investigation papers to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instructions on possible charges,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
