Recently, the government has been in talks of considering moving cigarettes to the non-Halal section of supermarkets, convenience stores and more.
While it’s still an ongoing topic of discussion, Isetan is making the first move as they were recently seen doing just that at their outlets in a mall in Kuala Lumpur.
They’ve moved cigarettes to the non-halal section
Recently, the government has been discussing the possibility of relocating cigarettes to the non-Halal section of supermarkets, convenience stores, and other retail outlets.
While this topic is still under consideration, Isetan has taken the initiative by implementing this change, as they were recently spotted doing exactly that at one of their outlets.
Cigarettes have been declared Haram since 1995
A netizen shared on X (formerly Twitter) how they boldly moved cigarettes to a section typically reserved for items intended for non-Muslims.
The caption of the post reads,
“In another development, Isetan KLCC has moved cigarettes to the non-halal section.”
Given that cigarettes have been declared Haram since 1995, their decision not only demonstrates a commitment to encouraging Malaysians to refrain from smoking but has also garnered praise from many online.
Netizens started flooding the comment section with their thoughts and reactions.
“Finally, it’s Isetan that is educating the people of Malaysia.”
“Well done, Isetan. I agree and support this decision.”
“Is it so hard for society to accept the fact that smoking cigarettes is Haram? The same goes for eating pork and drinking alcohol. It’s still Haram.”
