In a TikTok video, a blind or visually impaired content creator Loh Boon Keat shared a better way for the public to help a blind person walk or cross the road.

The video was captioned “Please don’t do this when you are guiding a blind person to walk”. In the video, Loh and his friend demonstrated a common way when people guide him to walk, which is to hold his white cane and lead him. They said that this is the wrong method, and there is a better way instead of doing this.

Loh said that the more accurate way to lead a blind or visually impaired person is to let them hold your shoulder, with their other hand still holding the white cane. You have to walk in front of them as well.

He added that another method, which is to lead a blind person by instructing them with voice, such as saying “go straight, wait, and turn” is not the right way as well. This will confuse them.

Besides, Loh also urged people to not block the yellow tactile paving with motorcycles or signboards, as it is crucial for helping the blind and visually impaired people.

Aside from learning something new from Loh’s video, some netizens also pointed out that they are impressed with how the Chinese Muslim creator speaks Malay well and fluently.

Apart from this video, Loh also shares his life as a blind person and information about the community. Check out his TikTok for more. Don’t hesitate to help a person in need, especially people with disabilities!
