The nation was shocked on May 7 when a huge tree was uprooted in central Kuala Lumpur, which resulted in a death and the public transport system in that area to malfunction.
As many trees are planted in cities and towns in the country, several checks were done before the accident.
On May 11, an old tree in Penang fell on Macalister Road.
According to BERNAMA, the BOMBA received a call for help from the public at about 10 am.
When the BOMBA team of 8 reached the scene, they saw that 2 uprooted trees were blocking the road, and one of them had fallen into the parking areas of a nearby building.
“There were no injuries or deaths, just 5 vehicles that were damaged after getting hit by the trees. The fence of the building was also damaged.”
In a report by TV3, several Malaysians expressed their relief that they got out of the car a few minutes before the tree came crashing down.
“Fortunately, a few customers and I were already in the restaurant. We almost became victims.”
Another Malaysian noted that her newly-purchased car of 2 weeks was damaged due to the tree.
“I stopped here to have breakfast and not long after, I heard a very loud bang. My new car sustained damage from it.”
The BOMBA team was assisted by the Civil Defence team, the Penang City Council team, and the volunteer BOMBA team. All of them worked together to cut down the trees, remove them, and clean up the area.
Fortunately, no individual was hurt due to the uprooted trees. We hope the authorities will run thorough checks on the existing trees and replant any if needed.
