Just recently (April 2019), Hong Kong’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) has issued a warning to members of the public to stop using these five brands or models of extension cords as they’ve found to be unsafe. Bastille Post reported that the wires in these extension cords are thinner than the requirement and therefore, could easily overheat and possibly cause a fire.
Here are the brands and models:
1. Brand: Remax
Model: RU-S4
2. Brand: LDNIO
Model: SC3301
3. Brand: LDNIO
Model: SC3604
4. Brand: Not Available
Model: ZGN-T06
5. Brand: Not Available
Model: ZGN-T08
Besides the thin wires inside, all the models (except Remax RU-S4) reportedly do not come equipped with a fuse, which is part of the safety requirement. As such, Hong Kong authorities have urged their citizens to stop buying and using these extension cords to avoid overheating issues which could lead to a fire.
After this news went viral on social media, many netizens including Malaysians were surprised by this revelation as these items are easily available in our country through online selling platforms. Some netizens expressed their concern as they are currently using one while others shared how they’ve been using these models for quite some time but nothing has happened.
As we’re all aware of, extension cords have long been identified as fire hazards, which is why it is banned in certain buildings such as hospitals and schools in certain countries. If you must use extension cords, we recommend you to choose the ones that have been approved by SIRIM.
