Study: M’sia Ranks 3rd in SEA for Sustainable Growth in the Travel & Tourism Sector Post-Pandemic

The spread of Covid-19 has hit hard especially in tourism industry since there were no travellers. With borders closed and travel restrictions everywhere, popular tourist spots saw a huge drop in visitors.

In a recent study shared by @seasia.stats, Malaysia secured the 3rd spot in Southeast Asia, ranking 35th globally in The Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2024.

The United States leads globally, while Singapore takes the top spot in Southeast Asia!

According to The Travel & Tourism Decelopment Index (TTDI) 2024, Malaysia secures the 3rd spot in Southeast Asia with a score of 4.28. Thailand follows closely in 4th place (47th globally) with a score of 4.12, and Vietnam ranks 5th (59th globally( with a score of 3.96.

Singapore takes the crown in Southeast Asia with an impressive score of 4.76. Indonesia comes in 2nd place with a score of 4.46.

Globally, the United States is in the lead with a score of 5.24. While in Southeast Asia, Singapore is at the top, putting them in 13th place. It’s worth noting that Indonesia has moved up 10 spots to rank 22nd in this year’s index.

Travel and tourism industry is bouncing back

Developed by the World Economic Forum, the TTDI evaluates 119 economies based on critical factors for sustainable growth in the travel and tourism sector, including sustainability, infrastructure, and recovery from the impacts of COVID-19.

The study shows that while the travel and tourism sector continues to grow post-pandemic, the recovery has been mixed and operating conditions remain challenging.

However, as we roll through 2024, the global travel and tourism industry is set to bounce back from the lows caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and could even surpass its pre-pandemic highs.

 

Here is the list of Southeast Asian countries and their respective scores:

1. Singapore – 4.76

2. Indonesia – 4.46

3. Malaysia – 4.28

4. Thailand – 4.12

5. Vietnam – 3.96

6. Philippines – 3.84

7. Cambodia – 3.57

8. Laos – 3.48
