Online transactions are easy to make when we have cards or e-wallets tied to our accounts.
A father in Singapore by the name of Mr Lim was shocked to find out that he had a 20,000 SGD (RM61,838) outstanding debt on his credit card.
The bank had called him and said that there were 89 transactions that were made under his name and amounted to more than 20,000 SGD (RM61,838).
“At first I thought I was scammed, but the credit card company said these were all legitimate transactions and there was nothing it could do.”
They started to investigate the case and found out that the 89 transactions originated from Mr Lim’s 18-year-old daughter’s e-wallet account. According to The Straits Times, Mr Lim had attached his credit card to that particular account for transportation means.
However, she attached her e-wallet account to her Genshin Impact account and had a “shopping spree” from August to October!
If you don’t know, Genshin Impact is a very popular game now as the art style is well done and there are so many things for players to discover.
But the game progress will be quite slow if one doesn’t spend money on the game. So, they have this system where players can buy items and it will be randomised.
Mr Lim has managed to reduce the debt by 10,000 SGD (RM30,919) through the bank’s goodwill and he urges parents to be more vigilant on this matter.
Well, that sounds like a disaster! Parents, be sure to check your credit card statements monthly and try to trace back the transactions to their source, especially if you have tied your bank account/credit card to your children for their use.
With how everything is digitalized, it is certainly easy for kids to have access to their parents’ accounts or cards, do you have a similar story to this? Let us know in the comments.
