That’s because Nanyang reported that Hokkiens in Malaysia can buy Proton cars at a special discounted price, according to an announcement by Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd’s chief executive officer, Li Chunrong. Wah, ho seh liao!

However, this discount is not just for any Malaysian claiming to be a Hokkien but they must also be a member of the Chinese guilds under the Federation of Hokkien Association Malaysia. Yes, there is such an association in Malaysia in case you didn’t know!

This special offer is currently ongoing and will be ending on 31 March this year.

It is a part of a mutual collaboration with the Hokkien Association and Proton. PONSB vice-president of sales and marketing Abdul Rashid Musa said, “We hope that our gesture will be a good starting point for many more collaborations to come.”

So, just how much discounts would you be able to get? Based on the price list, there are eight models listed and apparently members who want to buy one can get discounts ranging from 5% to 10%. In some cases, like the Proton Perdana 2.4, members can get up to RM12,911 which is a pretty hefty price slash!

However, don’t think that you can get away with pretending to be a member of the Hokkien Association because Abdul Rashid says that those who want to take advantage of the discount will have to go through a strict vetting process to ensure that they are qualified. You can check out their Facebook page to get more information about the association.
