During festive seasons, especially Chinese New Year and Raya, everyone gets together and creates good times. As for the kids and those who are not working yet, good times mean receiving Angpows, and for the Muslims, money in green packets.
Today, QR codes make everything easier in this digital world. It’s not just about making payments anymore but with the availability to share QR codes online, anyone can transfer any amount of money to you. What happens when you share your QR code online and ASK for duit raya instead?
A Malaysian man recently suggested others NOT to do so because it is not a kind gesture.
In a screenshot of a Whatsapp status shared on the X page @TweetIslamik, the man said sharing your QR codes in the hope that others will give you duit Raya is not a good thing to do and everyone should STOP doing so immediately.
“In Islam, it’s not permissible to ask around, especially when you can clearly afford it and when you don’t need it.”
“I don’t think they’re serious about asking for money”
Social media users, on the other hand, are divided on this matter. While some agreed with the man, others thought that it was all about sincerity and there was no need to make a big deal about it.
“This is all about dignity. I’m sorry to say that if parents are doing the same thing shamelessly, you don’t deserve respect. If you take care of your dignity, in God’s willing, you get what you want without even asking.”
“If the giver is sincere, there’s no issue, right? We’re not even forcing them.”
“I don’t see the need to make a big fuss out of it. If you want to give, you give. If not, it’s fine. No one is forcing you for duit raya anyway.”
“Give if you want. If not, just keep quiet.”
“I would’ve ignored but if the person does it every day and says ‘it’s noble to donate’, it ruins my mood. This trend is the benchmark to your pride.”
“This is also a safety issue about your bank account.”
“What about the kids who ask for duit raya physically?”
“People are just joking. They don’t really want the money.”

What do you think of this trend? Should we keep things classy by not asking, or do we keep up with the trend?
