A lorry collided with her car
Amber recounted how she was waiting at a traffic light when a lorry suddenly collided with her car while changing lanes.
“I was at the traffic light, and when it turned green, I started to move slowly at a speed of about 10 to 20 km/h. Out of nowhere, a lorry crashed into my car while switching lanes from right to left.”
She described how the accident caused extensive damage to the right side of her car, including a severely dented back fender and a burst tyre.
“It was my fault for not looking when changing lanes”
Following the collision, both Amber and the lorry driver pulled over to the side of the road, where the driver repeatedly apologised to her, acknowledging that it was indeed his fault. He said,
“It’s not your fault. I didn’t look carefully while changing lanes.”
She explained that the lorry driver admitting he was at fault gave her a sense of relief, but the situation was still overwhelming for her.
A tow truck driver took Amber’s car to the workshop and confidently assured her that he would take care of everything, including filing a claim with the lorry’s insurance. His reassurance gave her hope that the issue would be resolved without a hitch.
The lorry driver twisted the story and pinned the blame on her
Both Amber and the lorry driver made their way to the police station afterwards to report the incident, but unfortunately, they were unable to file a report due to a system outage.
That same night, she went back to the police station to give a detailed account of the accident. However, 2 weeks later, she received a call from the police asking her to provide a formal statement.
“When I met with the officer, I was taken aback to learn that the lorry driver had completely twisted the story. He claimed that I was the one who hit his lorry while changing lanes.”
“I was being punished for his mistake”
The next day, Amber received a message from an unknown individual claiming to be the person in charge. The message stated,
“It wasn’t the driver’s fault. This is an RTI case, so you’ll need to file a claim using your own car insurance policy.”
This prompted her to contact her car’s insurance company for clarification about her coverage and the claims process. 2 days later, she received an email stating that it was classified as an own damage claim under her vehicle.
When asked for advice, she said,
“My advice to all drivers is to be extra cautious, especially when dealing with lorries and buses on the road. It’s also a good idea to consider installing dash cameras in your car for added safety. Without proper evidence, it becomes difficult to take further steps.”
