Honda is truly the power of dreams, but not everyone can afford the dream. Regardless, it remains one of many people’s dream cars.
In an anonymous tweet shared by the Twitter page Emosi, a man, who earns only Rm1,500 a month shared his dilemma about his parents who constantly persuade him to get a new car. With a monthly wage like that, getting a brand new Perodua Axia or Myvi is understandable, but his parents have something else in mind.
“When are you getting a Honda?”
His mother is a housewife and his father has stopped working since he fell sick. However, that does not stop the pair from comparing the achievements of others with their son’s. The choice of car is unfortunately one of the ways his parents measure his success, as they have always wanted their son to drive a Honda.
“They said it’s a dream car, but I told them, I cannot afford to buy it.”
The man also said that it breaks his heart when his parents regularly speak about how successful other people are. One day, the man decided to tell his parents what he really has on his mind.
“Can we just live moderately and make do with what we have?”
Both of his parents are not working, so they are fully dependent on their sons and daughters for income.
Instead of asking, you might as well pray
In his confession, the man also expressed his desire to see the parents out there being more understanding towards their sons and daughters.
“Instead of asking when are we going to drive a Honda, or asking when will we change to a job that can afford us a Honda, why not pray for a better job for your son?”
In the meantime, netizens mostly agreed that the parents should not have burdened their son just for a car.
A netizen said that he learnt the hard way not to listen to parents blindly, especially when it comes to finances and careers when both parties think differently.
“Take their words as an encouragement and not rigid guidelines,” said the netizen.
Another commented, “What’s with the ‘Honda fetish’ that some people have? It has been proven a fetish that goes through generations.”
Meanwhile, one netizen said that the man should start giving less money to his parents so that they will understand the consequences.
“Starting from now till December 2023, give less than half of what you have given them. When they ask, tell them you’re saving up for a Honda. By August, they’ll stop talking about Honda.”
Fellow parents, have you ever urged your son or daughter to buy a specific brand of car? As for those who are earning the minimum wage, how do you survive while paying off your car loans?
