As Malaysians, we simply cannot deny our love for Mamak food. They’re available everywhere at all times, not to mention their cheap price yet delicious taste, so much so that even the pests don’t see the need to hide from the public anymore while feasting on the food.

Just recently, a Twitter user, Zoey shared a short (but horrifying) clip of his experience at a Mamak restaurant. While he was enjoying his supper, a huge rat was spotted feasting on the fried chicken in the warmer just beside Zoey himself. The rat was seen taking a few bites of the poultry before running to the other side.

It must’ve been a good night for the rat as it saved itself the need to go through the trash at the back alley for food, but the sight is truly bad news for us, especially the fans of Mamak food.

WORLD OF BUZZ reached out to Zoey for more information, but due to the concern for his safety, Zoey decided not to disclose the location & the name of the restaurant.

“I did inform the workers there about the rat, and they immediately disposed of the poultry and cleaned the area.”

Fortunately, his tweet immediately gained the attention of the Ministry of Health (KKM), who reached out to Zoey for more information. As of 11 pm last night (December 23), KKM has obtained the information from Zoey and promised him that they will soon visit the restaurant. Zoey also said that he is a regular at the Mamak restaurant and he doesn’t want to be the one who discloses the location of the restaurant.

Since KKM has got their attention on the matter, Zoey decided to just let the organisation carry out its duties.

In a screenshot of a conversation between Zoey and an officer of KKM, the former was told that KKM will conduct a check at the restaurant and look out for the risk of contamination.

“Usually, the restaurant will be instructed to halt its operations for 14 days for cleaning purposes, and we will issue a compound,” the KKM officer said.

At the time of writing (December 24), KKM has yet to release any statement about the matter.

Regardless, we hope that strict and immediate action will be taken against the restaurant for its negligence regarding hygiene matters. This should also serve as a reminder to all food operators out there to be more thorough when it comes to food preparation and cleanliness. Rat is a pest that contaminates the food and in serious cases, those infected are at risk of death.
